Why Is This Problem So Widespread?
Screens differ in almost every respect: brightness level, color temperature, gamut size, panel technology, and aging. Without active color management, each screen simply displays the raw data from an image file – and interprets the same numerical values in its own way.
It is like passing along a piece of music as nothing more than sheet music without specifying the tempo or key in which it should be played.
The Most Common Causes at a Glance
1. No Embedded ICC Profile If an image file does not contain a color space profile, each piece of software makes its own assumption – usually sRGB, and sometimes nothing at all. With AdobeRGB files without a profile: the image appears desaturated and dull. With ProPhoto without a profile: colors are completely wrong.
Solution: Always enable “Embed color profile” when exporting; use the sRGB color space for universal compatibility.
2. Color Management Not Active in the Browser Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) support color management – but not always fully or correctly:
- Older versions of Chrome ignored embedded profiles in certain situations
- Safari on macOS has supported P3 for years; other browsers have only supported it recently
- If an AdobeRGB image is displayed in a browser and the browser does not perform color management: the colors appear incorrect
Solution: Always export in sRGB for web publishing – this is the lowest common denominator across all devices and browsers.
3. Monitor Not Calibrated If your working monitor has a blue cast and you are used to it, you unconsciously compensate for it: The image appears edited to be warm, but looks neutral or orange on other screens.
Solution: Calibrate the monitor (→ Articles 10.1–10.3).
4. Wide-Gamut Monitor Without a Profile Modern wide-gamut monitors (P3, AdobeRGB gamut) display sRGB images as oversaturated without a correctly embedded profile – because they stretch the small sRGB color space across their larger display range.
Solution: The operating system and software must use the monitor’s ICC profile correctly. In the browser: use color-managed browsers (modern Chrome/Firefox/Safari).
5. Smartphone Screens with P3 iPhones, iPads, and many Android flagships use P3 displays. sRGB content is displayed correctly, but P3-native content appears oversaturated on sRGB monitors – and vice versa.
How Do I Know Which Device Is “Right”?
Short answer: The calibrated device with the correct profile. Without calibration, there is no objective right answer. With calibration and an sRGB workflow, the result is identical on all calibrated sRGB devices.
