What is a color space?
A color space defines which colors can be stored in a file at all. You can think of it like a container: A smaller container (sRGB) contains fewer colors, while a larger one (AdobeRGB, ProPhoto) contains more.
Its size is often visualized in the CIE diagram: The entire range of colors visible to humans forms a horseshoe shape. sRGB covers approximately 35% of it, AdobeRGB approximately 50%, and ProPhoto RGB nearly 100% (and even beyond that—it also contains non-visible colors).

sRGB – the safe standard
Developed by Microsoft and HP in 1996 as a standard for monitors and the early web. It is still the universal common denominator that virtually all devices support.
Advantages:
- Displayed correctly everywhere—browsers, social media, home printers, and all smartphones
- No risk of incorrect display due to missing profile support
- Lower risk of color banding at 8-bit (because the color space is more compact)
Disadvantages:
- Does not contain all the colors that a professional printer or wide-gamut monitor can display
- Vivid greens, cyans, and some blues found in nature cannot be displayed
When to choose sRGB: Web, social media, email, presentations, home printers, and when the recipient is unknown.
AdobeRGB – for professional printing
Developed by Adobe in 1998 to cover the larger color space of professional CMYK printers—especially in the green and cyan ranges.
Advantages:
- Contains a significantly larger portion of the green and cyan tones that CMYK printers can produce
- With professional printing and a calibrated workflow: visibly richer, more natural colors
Disadvantages:
- Displayed incorrectly when color management is not active: colors appear desaturated and dull
- Web browsers without color management (older versions of Chrome, Safari without color management enabled) display AdobeRGB images incorrectly
- Requires a wide-gamut monitor to see the benefits
When to choose AdobeRGB: Professional printing with a calibrated workflow, when the print shop processes AdobeRGB, and with a wide-gamut monitor.
ProPhoto RGB – only for internal processing
Developed by Kodak as a very large color space that captures all possible sensor data from a camera—and far beyond (it contains theoretical colors that lie outside the range of human vision).
Advantages:
- Maximum preservation of all color information from the RAW sensor during editing
- No clipping of color values during internal calculations
- Lightroom and Camera Raw work internally with ProPhoto RGB (as “Melissa RGB”)
Disadvantages and risks:
- 8-bit ProPhoto is dangerous: Because the color space is so large, each of the 256 values per channel represents a very large color range → visible color banding (posterization/banding) in gradients. Always use ProPhoto RGB in 16-bit.
- Not suitable for export—no monitor, printer, or browser can display ProPhoto correctly
- If ProPhoto files are opened without profile conversion, the colors appear completely incorrect
When to choose ProPhoto RGB: Only as an internal working color space in Photoshop (16-bit workflow). Never export without converting to sRGB or AdobeRGB.
Display P3 – the new standard for modern screens
Originally developed for cinema projectors, it is now standard on iPhones, iPads, MacBooks (since 2016), and many Windows laptops. Approximately 25% larger than sRGB, especially in the red range.
If photos should look their best on modern Apple devices for social media, P3 is worth considering as an export color space—but only if the monitor can also display P3. Otherwise, sRGB is the safe choice.
