Explanation
What can visual calibration do—and what can’t it do?
Without a measuring device, you cannot measure the monitor objectively; you can only adjust it based on your own perception. This has clear limitations:
- The human eye adapts – it gets used to color casts and perceives them as “normal” after a short time
- Different times of day and lighting conditions influence perception
- Major deviations can be detected and corrected, but fine color inaccuracies cannot
Result: Better than uncalibrated, but not comparable to an ICC profile from an actual measurement.
Step 1: Adjust monitor hardware settings
Before starting software calibration, first check the monitor’s OSD settings (On-Screen Display, the menu on the monitor itself):
- Brightness: 80–100 cd/m² for dimly lit work environments, 120 cd/m² in bright room lighting. Many monitors are shipped at 200–300 cd/m² – far too bright for photo editing.
- Contrast: Leave at the factory setting – manually adjusting contrast compresses the tonal range
- Color temperature / preset: Select “sRGB” mode or “Neutral”; disable gaming modes, “Vivid,” and “Cinema”
- Pay attention to room brightness: Adjust the monitor’s brightness to the surroundings – do not set it to maximum
Step 2: Windows – Color Management Assistant
Path: Control Panel → Appearance → Calibrate display color (or search for: “calibrate display color”)
The assistant guides you through four steps:
- Gamma: Adjust the slider’s midpoint so that the dots in the circles disappear as much as possible
- Brightness and contrast: Adjust using comparison images
- Color balance: Adjust the grayscale to neutral gray tones without a color cast
- Save the result: Store it in the system as an ICC profile
Important: Compare the new calibration status with the old one (button at the end of the assistant) – if the old one looked better, cancel the process.
Step 3: macOS – Monitor Calibration Assistant
Path: System Settings → Displays → Color → Calibrate
The macOS assistant is somewhat simpler, but guides you through the same basic settings:
- Gamma: Target value 2.2 (standard for photography, not 1.8 – that is a relic from the early days of Mac)
- White point: Select D65 (6500 K) – corresponds to average daylight and is the international standard for photo editing
- Name and save the profile
Enable expert mode: Select “Expert” in the assistant – this provides more control levels and more precise adjustment options.
Step 4: Check the result with test images
After calibration, check it using reference images:

What should you do about persistent color casts?
If a noticeable color cast is still visible after using the assistant:
- Check graphics card color settings: NVIDIA Control Panel / AMD Radeon Software → color corrections are often enabled there and can interfere
- Update graphics drivers: Outdated graphics drivers can interpret color profiles incorrectly
- Assign the profile manually: Windows → Color Management (colorcpl.exe) → select the monitor → check the default profile
- Consider investing in a measuring device (→ Article 10.3)
Practical tip
Warm up the monitor for at least 30 minutes before calibrating – LEDs and OLED panels noticeably change their color temperature during the first few minutes after being turned on. Anyone who calibrates immediately after startup is calibrating a different state from the one in which they will work afterward.
