What Are Blinkies?
Blinkies is the informal name for the camera’s highlight-clipping warning. During image playback after capture (or in Live View/EVF during capture), all pixels that have reached the maximum brightness value (255 at 8-bit)—and therefore no longer contain any image information—flash or are marked in color.
Activation: Usually in the camera’s playback menu or as an overlay in the image display after capture. Often called “Highlight Warning,” “Overexposure Warning,” or “Highlight Alert.”

What Does Clipping Mean?
Clipping occurs when a tonal value falls outside the displayable range:
- Highlight Clipping: Pixels are too bright → they are all set to 255 → a white area without texture
- Shadow Clipping: Pixels are too dark → they are all set to 0 → a black area without texture
With the RAW format, there is some buffer: The sensor captures more image information than the JPEG displays. Slightly overexposed RAW files can often still be recovered in post-processing—but heavily clipped areas cannot.
How Do You Interpret Clipping in the Histogram?
The histogram shows clipping through bars that touch the edges:
- Touching the right edge (highlights): Highlight clipping is present
- Touching the left edge (shadows): Shadow clipping is present
- Both: Extreme contrast—exposure bracketing or an ND filter is needed
When Are Blinkies Acceptable?
Not every blinky indication requires action:

Strategies for Avoiding Clipping
1. Reduce exposure: Apply exposure compensation of −0.3 to −1 EV until the blinkies disappear.
2. Use ETTR in a controlled manner: Bring the highlights close to the limit without clipping → maximum image information (→ Article 12.1).
3. Graduated ND filter: Darken the sky with a graduated filter while exposing the foreground correctly.
4. Capture an exposure bracket: Take multiple exposures and combine them later.
5. Use the RAW buffer: Slightly overexpose in RAW → pull back the highlights slider during development. Works up to approximately +1 to +2 EV, depending on the sensor.
Zebra Function (Video/Professional Cameras)
Many video cameras and professional still cameras offer a zebra pattern instead of blinkies—a diagonal stripe pattern in all areas that exceed an adjustable threshold (e.g., 95% brightness). Zebra warns earlier than clipping and enables more precise control.
Practical Tip
Enable blinkies in Live View (if the camera supports this)—then you can see clipping before capture and correct it immediately. This is especially indispensable with backlighting and bright skies. Combined with the histogram in the EVF, it provides a very precise picture of the exposure situation without taking a single test shot.
