What Is Focus Peaking?
Focus peaking is an electronic focusing aid that is active in the camera’s electronic viewfinder (EVF) or on the monitor. The algorithm analyzes in real time which areas of the image are currently in focus and marks them with a colored outline—typically red, yellow, or white.
How it works: High local contrast at edges = in focus. Low contrast = out of focus. Peaking marks the edges with the highest contrast.
Available only on: Mirrorless system cameras, compact cameras, and DSLRs in Live View mode. DSLRs in optical viewfinder mode cannot display focus peaking.
Applications
Vintage / manual lenses: Historical lenses (Zeiss, Leica, Pentax-Takumar, etc.) do not have autofocus. Focus peaking lets you use the manual focus ring precisely until the desired areas light up.
Macro photography: With an extremely shallow depth of field of just a few millimeters, autofocus is unreliable. Focus peaking shows exactly which plane of detail is currently in focus.
Video production: When shooting with manual lenses, focus peaking precisely shows which areas are in focus—the camera operator can deliberately shift focus (follow focus).
Portraits/beauty with a wide aperture: At f/1.2–f/1.8, the depth of field is limited to one eye—peaking helps ensure that exactly the eyes (not the tip of the nose) are in focus.
Focus Peaking Settings
Color:
- Red: Clearly visible on most subjects except red objects
- White: Neutral, good for colorful subjects
- Yellow: Good for dark subjects
Recommendation: Change the color depending on the subject. Many cameras allow quick switching via Fn buttons.
Sensitivity (High/Mid/Low):
- High: Responds to the smallest contrast changes—more areas light up, but out-of-focus areas may also be marked incorrectly
- Low: Only truly sharp edges are marked—more precise, but less sensitive
Recommendation: For macro and portraits, use “Mid” or “Low”—more accurate. For general manual focusing, use “High” as a quick reference point.
Limitations of Focus Peaking
- Highly textured subjects: On subjects with a lot of contrast (e.g., fur, fabrics), almost everything lights up—peaking becomes less meaningful
- With a wide aperture: A very shallow depth of field can cause tiny camera movements to shift the peaking display completely
- Not a replacement for focus magnification: The focus magnification function (enlarged view in the EVF) is more precise than peaking—use both together for maximum accuracy
Focus Magnification as a Supplement
Almost all cameras with an EVF offer a focus magnification function: When you turn the focus ring, the camera automatically magnifies the current focus area (2×, 4×, 8×). In this magnified view, you can see exactly whether the desired edge is truly sharp.
Combined workflow: Focus peaking for a quick rough assessment → focus magnification for precise final focusing.
Practical Tip
Focus peaking and eye AF are not competitors—they complement each other: For portraits with modern cameras, use eye AF for fast sequences and focus peaking + manual focus for deliberately composed individual shots. Especially when using vintage lenses on a modern mirrorless camera, the combination of focus peaking, focus magnification, and a high-quality EVF is an excellent alternative to the missing autofocus.
