Explanation
Lens Correction: Automatic Error Correction
Every lens produces characteristic optical errors. Modern RAW software corrects these automatically using lens profiles:
Vignetting: Darkening of the image corners caused by the lens construction—especially pronounced at wide apertures. Lightroom/Photoshop compensates for this by brightening the corners.
Distortion:
- Barrel distortion (wide angle): Straight lines appear curved outward
- Pincushion distortion (telephoto): Straight lines appear curved inward. Automatic profiles correct both types based on lens data in the EXIF.
Chromatic Aberration (CA): Color fringing along high-contrast edges—usually red/green or blue/orange. It occurs because light of different wavelengths is refracted to different degrees. Lightroom corrects it automatically with one click.
Activation in Lightroom: Develop module → Lens Corrections → enable “Enable Profile Corrections” and “Remove Chromatic Aberration.” Lightroom automatically recognizes the lens from the EXIF data.
Perspective Correction: Straightening Converging Lines
Converging lines occur when the camera is tilted upward or downward (→ Article 4.12). Correcting them afterward in Lightroom and Photoshop:

Guided Transform is the most precise method for architectural photos: Draw two actual vertical lines in the image (e.g., building edges) as guide lines—Lightroom aligns them precisely.
Photoshop – Perspective Correction: Filter → Filter Gallery → Adaptive Wide Angle (for extreme wide-angle distortion) Edit → Perspective Warp (for manual control) Filter → Geometry Distortion → Lens Correction (for automatic profile correction)
Cropping After Correction
Perspective corrections always result in slanted image edges and empty corners. These must be cropped afterward. Lightroom does this automatically with “Constrain Crop,” or you can crop manually to the largest possible rectangular area.
Tip: Leave a little more margin than necessary when taking the photo—this gives the correction more room to work without losing important image content.
Warp and Content-Aware
For complex perspective manipulations beyond basic correction:
Photoshop Warp: Distort the image freely—for creative perspective manipulations Content-Aware Scale: Stretch the image without distorting important areas—Photoshop automatically detects and protects the main subjects
Practical Tip
Always enable lens correction first—before making any other corrections. Otherwise, vignetting and distortion will affect all subsequent adjustments. In Lightroom, you can automate this as an import preset (→ Article 11.11): Every imported RAW file automatically has lens correction enabled.
