What is an adjustment layer?
An adjustment layer is a special layer that contains no pixels of its own, but only a correction instruction. This instruction is applied to all layers below it—the original image remains completely unchanged.
Why this is better than direct corrections:
- The correction can be readjusted at any time by double-clicking the layer
- It can be disabled with one click (eye icon) to view the before/after comparison
- It can be deleted without leaving any traces
- Multiple adjustment layers can be stacked and their effects combined
The most important types of adjustment layers
Brightness/Contrast Simplest brightness correction—good for quick adjustments. For precise work, it is better to use Curves.
Exposure Simulates a camera exposure correction—good for strong underexposure/overexposure corrections.
Curves (tone curves) Most powerful tool for tonal and color corrections. Enables independent adjustment of shadows, midtones, and highlights—both globally and per color channel. (→ covered in detail in Article 11.7)
Hue/Saturation Shifts hues and changes saturation and brightness—globally or for individual color channels (similar to the HSL panel in Lightroom).
Selective Color Changes the CMYK components within individual color ranges—very precise color correction, especially for print workflows.
Color Balance Shifts color casts in shadows, midtones, and highlights separately—a classic tool for color grading.
Black and White Converts to B&W with full control over each color channel (→ Article 8.9).
Lookup Tables (LUTs) Applies a look lookup table—fast, consistent moods and looks.
Creating adjustment layers
In Photoshop:
- Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Desired type
- Or: Click the half-circle icon at the bottom of the Layers panel
In GIMP:
- Colors → Curves / Brightness-Contrast, etc. → Apply as a new layer (via Script-Fu or plug-ins; GIMP supports adjustment layers less natively than Photoshop)
The automatic layer mask
Each adjustment layer automatically contains a white layer mask:
- White = correction is active
- Black = correction is hidden
- Gray = correction is partially active (according to the brightness)
Practical example: A Brightness adjustment layer should brighten only the sky, not the foreground. Blacken the mask (fill it with black, then paint the sky back in with a white brush)—the correction affects only the sky area.
Clipping masks: adjustment layer for just one layer
By default, an adjustment layer affects all underlying layers. With a clipping mask (Alt + click between the adjustment layer and the target layer), the effect is limited to exactly one layer below.
Useful for: Corrections that should affect only a specific object without changing the rest of the image.
Practical tip
Create all global corrections as adjustment layers—never apply them directly to the image. The extra effort (one additional click) always pays off: You can still make adjustments weeks later without having to start over. A well-labeled layer structure (double-click the layer name) makes finding things again later a breeze: “Exposure +0.5,” “Cooler sky,” “Brighten skin tones.”
