Explanation
What Is a Tone Curve?
The tone curve shows the input values (original brightness) on the X-axis and the output values (new brightness) on the Y-axis. A straight diagonal line = no change. Every point on the curve can be moved:
- Point moved upward → this tonal range becomes lighter
- Point moved downward → this tonal range becomes darker
- Bottom left = shadows | Top right = highlights | Middle = midtones
The S-Curve—the Classic
The S-curve is the most common curve shape in photo editing:
- Upper third moved slightly upward → highlights become brighter
- Lower third moved slightly downward → shadows become darker
- Result: Increased contrast with details in highlights and shadows well preserved
A gentle S-curve (+0.3 in the highlights, −0.3 in the shadows) is often the first step in image development—it gives almost every photo more depth and contrast.
Color Correction Using Curve Channels
Each color has its own curve channel (R, G, B). Adjusting the individual channels can correct or intentionally create color casts:

Curves in Lightroom
Lightroom offers the tone curve in the Develop module under “Tone Curve.” Two modes:
- Parametric: sliders for Highlights, Lights, Darks, and Shadows—simpler but less precise
- Point Curve: direct curve manipulation as in Photoshop—via “Show Curve Editor” (the small icon at the bottom right of the Curve panel)
HSL curve in Lightroom: Under “Camera Calibration,” there is a separate section for primary colors—less powerful than Photoshop curves, but useful for quick color corrections.

Practical Tip
Set the black and white points as the first step: In the Curves dialog, click the darkest area with the black point eyedropper and the lightest area with the white point eyedropper. Photoshop automatically sets an optimal tonal range. Only then continue with the S-curve and color channel correction. This first step alone noticeably improves almost every photo.
