Explanation
The Problem: Limited Dynamic Range
The human visual system processes a very large range of brightness (approximately 20–24 stops). A camera sensor can capture only 10–14 stops at the same time. In high-contrast scenes (bright sky + dark foreground), you have to choose:
- Correctly exposed sky → foreground too dark
- Correctly exposed foreground → sky blown out
HDR solves this problem.
How Does HDR Work?
- Take an exposure bracket: At least 3 shots of the same subject with different shutter speeds—typically: −2 EV, 0 EV, +2 EV (use the camera’s bracketing function)
- Use a tripod: The subject must not move between shots (otherwise ghosting will occur)
- Merge: Software calculates an image containing the details from all exposure levels
- Tone mapping: The HDR image is mapped to the screen’s range (low dynamic range)

HDR in Lightroom (The Easiest Method)
- Select all exposure-bracket images in the filmstrip
- Right-click → Merge → HDR
- Lightroom calculates a DNG raw image with an expanded dynamic range

The “HDR Look”—and How to Avoid It
Excessive tone mapping creates the typical “plastic HDR look”: surreal colors, excessive clarity, and unnatural shading. Subtle HDR editing, on the other hand, looks like a normal, well-exposed photo.
Tip for natural HDR: In Lightroom, after the HDR merge, reduce the highlights and brighten the shadows—no aggressive tone mapping and no excessive Clarity.
Practical Tip
Use bracketing automatically: Enable AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) in the camera—then 3 (or more) images with different exposures will be taken automatically each time you press the shutter. When using a tripod, use a remote shutter release or the self-timer so the camera does not move between shots.
