What Is RAW?
RAW literally means “raw.” A RAW file contains the unprocessed raw data from the camera sensor—before the camera applies any automatic corrections or compression. It is therefore also called the “digital negative”—analogous to an analog negative, from which different prints can be made in a lab.

The Most Important Advantages of RAW
1. Change the white balance afterward In a RAW file, the white balance is stored only as metadata, not “permanently embedded.” It can be changed afterward to any value without loss—as if the photo had been taken in different lighting.
2. Recover underexposed images RAW contains more image information in the shadows. A RAW image that is underexposed by 2–3 stops can often still be recovered. A correspondingly underexposed JPEG shows heavy noise and color banding after being brightened.
3. Recover details in highlights In slightly overexposed areas, RAW still contains texture information that has already been lost in JPEG—because the camera has more latitude before an area actually “blows out.”
4. Full color depth for editing 16-bit color depth (RAW) instead of 8-bit (JPEG) means significantly more gradations → no visible color jumps (banding) during intensive editing.
5. Control sharpening and noise reduction The camera automatically applies sharpening and noise reduction to JPEG images. With RAW, the photographer decides—with better algorithms and greater precision.
Disadvantages of RAW
- Not immediately usable: Must be opened and converted with software
- Large files: 3–6× larger than JPEG → more storage space, slower transfers
